Local Lore: Fort Collins’ Underground Tunnels

You’ve wandered the sunny patios, ducked into indie bookstores, maybe even danced the night away in Old Town—but have you ever wondered what’s beneath your feet?

Turns out, Fort Collins has a whole hidden world underground. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, a web of tunnels connected Old Town businesses, originally used to move goods discreetly from place to place. But over time, they gained new (and sometimes shady) purposes—think brothel backdoors, secret booze runs during Prohibition, and even a morgue where horses pulled coffins underground.

One of the creepiest spots? The old town jail from the 1880s, buried beneath street level with an 18-inch-thick solitary cell still intact. Another tunnel was reinforced as a Cold War bunker. Yeah—it’s basically the Netflix docu-series Fort Collins forgot to pitch.

Most locals don’t even know this underground network exists. But you can explore it on foot through Fort Collins Tours’ Friday and Saturday Ghost Tours, led by guides who blend spooky tales with real-deal local history.
